Hubble to be abandoned
Nope, neither of the candidates motivated very many people to actually get up Election day should be a national holiday, The daylight savings time change should be delayed till adfter election day too. theres lots of ways to help turn out. |

Maybe not a holiday, but why not let it take a week, including a weekend? That way, there are many more opportunities for those of us who work for a living to make it to the polls. |

I prefer to vote in person, and it's not always possible to get off on election day. Being able to stroll into the Supervisor of Elections office any day of Election Week would make things much easier. If you don't really want to vote, don't then complain that the wrong guy got in If you don't vote, you *are* voting for the winner. |

That, and what part Dark Matter played in shaping the present cosmos are the two questions that are much on the lips of many in the scientific community these days. Pat |

Anecdotally, you do get significant turnout improvements over longer voting periods; anything over a week is overkill, and about a calendar week seems best. The problems are practical - unless you're using a hands-off system, like some form of internet voting, it's quite resource intensive (you'll still get voting surges, you'll need poll workers and locations, you'll need more extensive security measures - you have to guard a ballot box for seven nights! - and this all adds up), And, of course, more conceptual ones - how much more is a long polling period affected by the media (which is a staggeringly large potential issue in the US, probably more so than anywhere else I can easily name), should candidates be allowed to campaign during it, should media coverage be limited during it (both practical over a day, dosgy over a week...). It's an interesting question, but certainly not the simplest of issues to implement :-) -- -Andrew Gray |
