Default If A11 had aborted

In Buzz's book "Magnificant Desolation", page 16, he writes that Tom
Paine said "If oyu have to abort, I'll see that you fly the next moon
landing flight. Just don't get killed."

Is that right? I had always thought that it would have gone next to
the A12 crew.

I believe that Deke had said something similar. The honest truth is, "we'll
never know." It was probably a good idea to make such an offer since you
don't want folks in that situation pushing the edge of the envelope too far
just to be first.

You'd much rather have an abort and the bad press with that, but a live
crew, than no abort and a dead crew.

The A13 crew didn't get the next flight.

Or perhaps their backup: Lovell, Anders, and Haise.

Moot point. Lovell had already announced it would be his last flight.

From "First Man", page 388:
Paine told him "If we didn't get a chance to land and came back, he
would give us the chance to go again, on the very next flight. I
believe he meant it at that point."

The truth was, Paine told every subsequentt Apollo crew the very same
thing. It was his way of encouraging the crews not to try anything
stupid, thinking it would be their only chance. If aborted, ...
Armstrong was ready to take him up on his offer.

I've not heard before of the ``next flight'' offer being
extended to any crew after Apollo 12. Apollo 13, of course, would
have made a fine test case for it particularly given Lovell's decision
to retire. Have you a citation for it being made after 12?
