An excellent evening. The big telescopes are coming back into life - such a contrast from the last time I was there, 3 years ago. Saw Mars, still very low, through the Thompson 30 inch reflector - clearly visible ice cap despite the murk, sea mist and clouds. Can't wait to get there on a cold dark night. If you have the chance to go to any of their Astronomy Week evenings - grab the chance. Perseids disappointing - there were a few but - a big but - some very bright red lights guide you about the site - but they might as well be white they are so dazzlingly bright - that dark adaption is impossible.
