From
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050531/ap_on_sc/russian_rocket_launch "Russia Rocket Takes Off on 16-Day Mission" "MOSCOW - A Russian rocket carrying a satellite laboratory blasted off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome Tuesday on a 16-day mission. Russia's Federal Space Agency said the Soyuz-U rocket was launched at 8 a.m. EDT and entered orbit 10 minutes later. The European Space Agency said the Foton-M2 research satellite carries some 850 pounds of equipment to conduct more than 20 chemical, physical and biotechnological experiments." space.com lists the experiments aboard:
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/sfn_050531_fotonm2.html quote Many of the scientific investigations finding their way to space aboard the Foton are being reflown after their Foton-M1 capsule was destroyed when its Soyuz booster exploded seconds after liftoff in October 2002. All the experiments on the failed flight are on this mission with the exception of a French biological incubator and a few student experiments, European Space Agency Foton project manager Antonio Verga told Spaceflight Now. An applicable technology demonstration called Favorite - for Fixed Alkaline Vapor Oxygen Reclamation In-flight Technology Experiment - will test a new way to generate oxygen from water molecules. /quote The "Favorite" experiment was noted is sci.space.station in an Elektron thread. There is also an instrument duplicating the heat pipe experiment lost on Columbia's last flight. A student sub-satellite had to be omitted for funding reasons. /dps |
