With regard to the fix proposed, it seems to me that the real problem that
caused it was way before the current concerns about low Morale, and I find
it very odd that materials of such a different heat treat history could be
used without anyone noticing it, especially as from my experience even to
the naked eye such changes would affect appearance of the raw material.

so, are they sure that these new items, which presumably were also made some
time back are also made of the right stuff?

Kind of makes one wonder if all the problems with the surface rtreatment of
the Sarj race ring might not be much the same issue, not enough attention
to the actual treatment properties after the treatment.

I always thought the stringers were just a foam shape :-)

Why was this never seen before, it seems to be a material and
operational design issue as opposed to a manufacturing defect.

With regards to tanking, an argument was made that the top of the
stringers are under greater stress because it is at the bottom of the O2
tank and thus gets cooled much faster as the liquid O2 is dumped in there..

Couldn't they do some sort of pre-cooling of the bottom of the O2 tank
to have a more gradual cooling of the structure until it reaches a
temperature where dumping O2 at full rate would no longer be a problem ?

pre cool, just start and stop tanking to condition the tank, like 5%
fuel, then stop, wait a bit then fuel normally........

thats a low tech approach

You know if the line hadnt leaked, the cracked foam wouldnt of been
found, the structural defect would of flown and today we could of
still been discussing the loss of a 3rd orbiter and crew
