November 2008 NYC Events
Whatever you NYC folks do, might as well not bother taking any pictures of our moon along with other planets, because according to everything NASA/Apollo that’s just technically impossible, especially if you and your unfiltered camera were situated upon our physically dark Selene/noon.. We're told that not even with far better than film dynamic range (such as the HDTV via JAXA) simply can not possibly include the solar illuminated Selene/moon along with anything else other than Earth. Therefore, pay no attention to all the others as having obtained such pictures of our physically dark Selene/moon and other planets in the same FOV. How about we play God, and bring that big and bright looking moon down to the same dot size of Venus, whereas lo and behold, there's no contest as to which one has the greater albedo. Even a 100% coal and carbon lampblack dusted surface the size and area of Selene might be nearly as bright as viewed from Earth. However, I wonder how bright that terrain is while walking on that physically dark surface, and especially if using a polarized optical filter? BTW, I’ve got lots of other examples of our physically dark but otherwise perfectly solar illuminated Selene/moon along with the likes of Jupiter or Saturn, and perhaps ten fold more of those including Venus. Of course these were all terrestrial obtained and thus had the optical and dynamic range benefits of having to look through our polluted atmosphere, that which must have nicely filtered and thereby done the trick that anything via NASA/Apollo simply couldn’t muster. ~ Brad Guth Brad_Guth Brad.Guth BradGuth BG / “Guth Usenet” On Nov 27, 10:55 pm, "." wrote: NYC EVENTS FOR NOVEMBER 2008 --------------------------- John Pazmino NYSkies Astronomy Inc www.nyskies.org The following astronomy activities in the commuting ring enclosing New York City are operated by various organizations. A few cultural items of special importance to City astronomers are also included. Altho NYC Events confirms the listed items, they are subject to change by their sponsors. Check with their contacts. Let the sponsor know that you learned of its event thru NYC Events. You may ask for previous NYC Events thru ', because only the current issue is in the website. It is replaced by next month's issue. For events which missed NYC Events, check the NYSkies Yahoogroup forum. Join NYSkies by visiting 'www.nyskies.org/yahoo.htm'and picking either the email or website option. Hours on November 1st are Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Hours from November 2nd to end of month are Eastern Standard Time. Observer's Handbook ----------------- NYSkies once again offers the Observer's Handbook, from Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, at steep discount, with NO MINIMUM number of copies required. The price is $20, with pack & post to your US postal address. The requests in hand as at October 25 already consumed a large portion of our supply, but you can still grab your copy. Details are at 'www.nyskies'org/oh.htm'and 'www.nyskies.org/ohclub.htm'. Facility curtailments ------------------- With the decline of the global economy, there could be sudden changes in the listed events. Many are hosted by facilities subject to shortfalls of funding, such as museums and parks. Cutbacks may force the event to shift day, hour, location, or be cancelled. The change may be of short leadtime. Please check with the event contact for last minute advisements. Mind well that the event sponsor usually has no effective influence on the necessity to alter the event. Potential savings --------------- With the global economic decline events that have an admission fee may offer special discounts or waive the fee. Some already did so during October 2008. The free or reduced admission may apply for only certain days or hours and may be announced on short notice. Please check with the event contacts for latest news. This economic climate pushed NYC Events to a level not ever imagined befo a safety net for astronomers. In one place, in convenient form, NYC Events presents astronomy activity across the New York region. Unlike some other lists of activities, which charge a fee or require 'registration', NYC Events is absolutely free for the asking or clicking. Far more importantly, as readers are now telling me, most of the items in NYC Events are either free or cheap. What happened in the last couple months, specially during October, is that astronomers turned to NYC Events for low-cost access to astronomy enlightenment. That's all the more reason you, the event operator, should take the care to get your events into NYC Events correctly and currently. You have folk out there looking for you! Please review your notices and wensites for completeness, clarity, legibility. Update your contact information. Be sure your publicity chair has NYC Events on his notice list. General news ---------- November and December have major holidays near their end. This typicly shoves activity to the front of the month or skips events at the end. This is specially the situation for events held at schools, which recess during these holiday periods. NYC Events is proud to bring on board three new members. Welcome, please, City College physics lectures, City University Center for Liberal Studies, Queens College physics lectures. The physics talks can be quite technical, but they can be appreciated, if not fully understood, by home astronomers. And don't forget that campus astronomers keep NYC Events handy. Lower Hudson Valley Challenger Center reminds that its website is 'www.lhvcc.com', not '... .org'. The latter is an outfit that offers paper model kits. Some of the kits are of spacefaring items, leading visitors to think the site is part of the Center. Secret Science Club moved its operations to Bell House from Union Hall. New location is still a short train ride from Manhattan. It is NOW the time to get about lining up your events for December and January! The yearend period is the toughest time to compile NYC Events. Sponsor and host staff are away, the facility may be in recess, and, now with the downswing of the economy, arrangements may finalize at the last minute, possibly with abrupt unexpected changes. Event news -------- By October the IRT lines shrank their excessive delays of service. Things are back to normal, crowds are once again tolerable. The easing up resulted from strong efforts by NYC Transit and a somewhat thinner ridership due to the slackening economy. On October 2nd the Intrepid ship was towed to its Pier 86 home. There is goes thru finishing work for the reopening on November 8th. NYSkiers were in the masses around the harbor to watch the move. NYSkies Astro Seminar on October 2 had a vigorous dialog on the space projects of other countries. It centered on the Shenzhou-7 flight and delayed Hubble repair visit. The Seminar on the 16th discussed extrasolar planets. Handout of a table of planetary stars missed 3 newly found planets. They were added a few days later la an updated edition for the NYSkies website. NYSkiers, about 80 others, greeted Dr Edward Belbruno at the Metropolitan Opera Guild on 4 October. He was on panel to discuss the Manhattan Project, subject of the 'Doctor atomic' opera. Belbruno also unveiled his new painting honoring Robert Oppenheimer and the bigbang. Governors Island wrapped up its 2008 season on October 12 with record visitors and plans to release more of the island for enjoyment next year. The extended run in 2008 allowed visitors to watch the sunset andVenusover the harbor. The Concorde supersonic airliner had its nose reattached and then barged to the Intrepid pier on October 16. First it stopped in Bayonne until pier was ready to receive it. It was in a few days set on the Intrepid's deck for the reopening of Intrepid Museum on November 8. The two blockbuster astronomy shows of October 2008 were the Antikythera lecture on the 22nd and the Manilius conference on the 24- 25. The former, 'Gears FOR the Greeks', was at the CUNY Graduate Center and covered the history and current studies about the Greek astronomical analog calculator. The latter, 'Forgotten stars', convened at Columbia University for a dialog about Marcus Manilius and his Astronomica poem. Written in the 1st century AD, it gives insight to the astronomy and astrology in the Roman Empire of Caesar Augustus. Sky news ------ I made a silly mistake, handed back to me by about 50[!] readers, in the October NYC Events. The storm that dumped rain and wind on the City in September was Hanna, not Faye. The City got uncertain or threshold views of the Milky Way on 6-7 October. Reports were a bit inconsistent due to the touch-&-go quality of the sky that night. NYSkers vowed to keep watch for a solid sighting during this Milky Way season. On October 21-22 the City scored the first positive Milky Way sighting of 2008! In cold windy air, and between scudding clouds!, the Scutum cloud, Cygnus branch, and a patch in Cepheus were spotted. Reports came from more places in the City then I can recall: south and west Brooklyn, south Staten Island, east Bronx, south Queens, Rockaways. The Milky Way season continues thru November 30th. Please keep looking. Many readers spottedVenuspeeping over the skyline during October. She's gradually edging upward, into darker sky, after sunset. She'll be far more prominent in November. At the end of the month, actually on December 1st,Venus,Moon, andJupiterconvene in evening twilight. This is the formal outcoming ofVenusas the new evening star of the coming.winter and spring. Jupitercontinued to fascinate readers with his three red spots. They were well separated in October. withJupitersliding low in the southwest into thicker agitated air. He changes place withVenuson December 1st. November 2nd is the return to Eastern Standard Time. Set your clocks BACK, BEHIND one hour. Note that the clock period 01:00 to 01:59 repeats on the 2nd. It runs thru first under EDST and again under EST. As at October 25, NYSkies had in hand about 25 requests for the Observer's Handbook. The books arrived from RASC on the 31st. The first batch of them shipped out to their astronomers by 16:00 on that same day. |
