I hesitate to give publicity to such a daffy idea but:

Light Up The Sky is a national event in which kite flyers raise money
for the BBC's "Children in Need"

Fly your kites in the dark - attach a torch, night light, anything you
like as long as it lights up the sky. Team ELF are holding a fly-in as
part of this event - everyone is welcome to join us:

Thursday 27 November 7pm

etc - so have a Tonk and don't bother with deep sky photos if you are
anywhere near Dymchurch that night. Expect hysteria and UFO sightings,
ye Men of Kent.

Can I recommend diode bicycle lights Martin? Cheap, bright,
flashing & very lightweight and the batteries last for ages. I hope
you get the wind. ;-)

I've always found that flying lights on a kite is a lot harder than I
thought it would be. Although all my kites seem to have lots of spare
pull, adding tiny weights makes them unflyable. It's also surprisingly
difficult to steer them in the dark when I can't see the lines.

I don't have this problem with a single-line kite if the load is
attached to the line itself.

Best,
Stephen

I've never tried flying a single line kite.

It seems much too obvious to state. But how much lift a particular
size of kite will generate is very wind dependant. The power of the
wind being the cube of the velocity? (Memory failure here) The
addition of a lightweight diode bicycle light will allow a single line
kite (of sufficient size to generate enough lift in the prevailing
wind conditions) to be seen at night. I await the reports of crossed
lines, collisions & general chaos with interest. Perhaps you should
all wear bicycle crash helmets? :-)
