Still not much information on what makes it so special. I just looked
at the manufarturer's web page
( http://www.containerless.com/realglass.htm ) and there it seems that
transmission up to 5500 nm and long life times of the laser ion are
special features. Tunability was mentioned somewhere in the Laser
Focus World aticle, but that is typical for glass hosts.

No mention of a high heat conductivity and with glasses typically a
factor of 10 worse than YAG, this is going to be a problem in the
high-power lasers they say it's so good for.

NASA RESEARCH PROPELS DEVELOPMENT OF NEW GLASS

There's a new glass in town. The glass, developed with
the help of a unique NASA levitator facility, is available for
numerous commercial applications including lasers and optical
communications.

"We have patented a family of new glasses and have established
processes for making and using them in practical
applications," said Dr. Richard (Rick) Weber, director of the
Glass Products Division of Containerless Research Inc., the
small company that invented and produces the glass in
Evanston, Ill. "We're already making commercial quantities of
glass rods and plates for use in lasers," he said.

REAl Glass -- made from Rare Earth oxides, Aluminum oxide
and small amounts of silicon dioxide -- has unique properties
that were identified using both the company's containerless
processing techniques and a NASA ground-based research
facility.

That many buzzwords ...
Appears to be the usual get-funds-hype to attract investors,
and/or justify public subsidies.

Instead of spendy glass for lasers, how about just plain old BASALT,
as a glass fiber that'll sufficiently knock your GPa socks off.

Basalt tether GPa update: http://guthvenus.tripod.com/gv-lse-gpa.htm

Be advised; The following is yet another paid infomercial on behalf of
another means to an end, of creating a lunar gateway that'll help
rather immensely in getting your sorry butt to/from places like a warm
and toasty Venus, or a frozen and irradiated to death planet like
Mars. But there's certainly more to this LSE-CM/ISS, such as
accommodating a 100 GW laser cannon, of 0.5 milliradian as a weapon or
perhaps something more personal, such as a 0.05 milliradian pinpoint
targeting capability, sort of an ABL on steroids.
