The military wants solar power satellites ... real bad. Consider yourself lucky that have I pointed out very early on in the development process, that the laws of physics demand that the rocket body be incorporated into the solar power satellite design, and thus you get your beloved space colonization architecture pretty much for free. |

What their idea of: "If you build these things, we'll buy power from you" reminds me of is: "If you stick a giant cargo bay on it and give it delta wings, we'll launch our satellites on it." Any company in their right mind is going to say to them is: "We'll build it provided you pay for it, and it's all yours once it's done. Otherwise, go to hell." Pat |

All successful companies tell their potential customers to go to hell. It's just common sales sense. |

You know if only the military needed a way to connect computers in some sort of network. If only our national security depended on building space infrastruture like low cost to orbit, power plugs in space and space ports etc....winning the military space-race. Oh, that's right, our security does depend on winning that race. Our future economy and global environment also depend on it. Having a product that could be useful to just about anyone is a salesman's wet-dream. We need to stop worrying about how hard and long term SSP would be, and focus on the pitch. It's getting the commitment to start the project that matters. The rest will take care of itself. -- Dave Michelson -- Greg Moore SQL Server DBA Consulting Remote and Onsite available! Someday hunting space rocks will be just another part of Air Force basic training~ Last I checked, it was the Chinese that recklessly blew up a satellite with an ASAT weapon and put hundreds of other satellites in danger from the debris... But of course, its all the U.S.'s fault... It may sound like I'm against what the military is doing in space, quite the opposite. It's just that everyone seems in denial they're doing it. What's this "feverish pace" you speak of? What exactly is the U.S. military doing now that they weren't doing 40 years ago? Hell, back You're right, protecting access to oil IS the number #1 goal of the military as it was 40 years ago. It seems there is too much money tied up into the status quo WRT energy to ever see a change to a new form. In short, who has time for space when all your assests are protecting access to fossil fuel? then they were making "feverish plans" for Dyna-Soar, Blue Gemini and MOL that all came to nothing. Then they got onboard Shuttle and had "feverish plans" to refuel spy satellites and inspect enemy satellites that all came to nothing. Then they had "Star Wars" and pipedreams of giant laser battle satellites that came to nothing. Now it has two mediocre EELVs that are costing them a fortune with no obvious improvement over their predecessors, to launch the same ol' spy satellites they've been launching since the '70s. This is "feverish"? You seem disappointed that we haven't conquered space with fictious enemies and the like. What ever happened to Eisenhower's vision of a non military use of space? |
