Just read an ariticle in AIAA Aerospace America that might interest you all,
hits a number of topics discussed here, including aborts.

SAFE LAUNCHES FOR CEV

If EELVs are used to launch NASA’s Crew Exploration Vehicle,
an old escape system may get a new look.

which says...

existing Atlas V lineup use a single Common
Core Booster powered by an RD-180 engine...
