Default Humans to colonize Mars by 2023, claims Dutch company

"Dutch space company Mars One has unveiled their secret
plan to have humans living (and dying) on the red planet by
2023. According to their video which hit YouTube today, the
first four-person team will take seven years to reach their
destination, with additional crews heading off every two
years after that to live out their remaining days establishing
a permanent settlement. While this sounds like the plot of
a science fiction film, the project and the company behind
it seem legitimate, having apparently been endorsed by
Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Prof. Dr. Gerard 't
Hooft."

A supply mission prior to the rover mission to select a site. Sounds
rather like the wrong order.

The real question is "Can it be patched?"
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway...
feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hp.com but NOT BOTH...

The absence of a provision to bring the people back raises issues to do
with geriatric health care on Mars (or perhaps just poison pills). The
fact that it's a private venture means that it could collapse
financially, leaving the people on Mars stranded with no further
supplies (time for those poison pills again).

The kind of people who would volunteer for such mission are probably
exactly the kind who should not be allowed to go.

It would be like sending a group to live on Antarctica, only worse,
since there is virtually no livable atmosphere.

A seven year trip? Oh, they're going to be in such a good mood when
they finally get there...

It's not actually a seven year trip, though the report somewhat gives
that impression. The seven years is from the launch of the first
hardware towards mars until the first people arrive. The actual transit
time for the people is 7 months.

The video at http://mars-one.com/ and
http://now.msn.com/now/0531-mars-colony.aspx says seven months travel.

It does not verbally say, but the site shows, seven years between first
launch (unmanned) and first manned landing.
