Woomera chosen as launch site for ISS resupply
http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems...8/s1719530.htm
Sorry if this has already been mentioned here. --- Woomera chosen as rocket launch site for space station "Rockets will be launched from Woomera in outback South Australia to the International Space Station (ISS), starting in 2008. "NASA has selected two American companies to launch rockets from Woomera. Rocket Plane Kistler and Space-X will conduct orbital flight tests as well as commercial operations from a spaceport at Woomera, and carry cargo to the ISS. "It is believed Leighton Contractors will build the Woomera launch facilities. "Woomera was originally involved in testing of long-range missiles and rockets during the Cold War." |

Got to be cheaper and easier than trying to launch anything at KSC with NASA looking over your shoulder and objecting every time you don't do things "their way". Bureaucrats are bureaucrats, and Australia isn't immune to them. Give them time, and they'll get just as anal as NASA and the Air Force. Especially if something goes wrong early on, like, say, SpaceX dropping its payload on a nearby warehouse... again. Besides, does the world really need yet another expendable launch vehicle base? All the existing ones are underused as it is. There's a lot of real estate at the Cape (Pad 36, anyone?), with nice payload processing facilities ready and waiting... Somehow, I get the feeling this Woomera plan will never see the light of day. Brian |

This one will be a "reusable" launch vehicle base. For whatever it's worth... |

Woomera chosen as launch site for ISS resupply
It'll never happen. There would need to be some interest and
money (more importantly!) from the Australian government, and they simply haven't got a clue. I suspect this is for Rocket Plane Kistler only, since Kistler originally planned to use Woomera. The SpaceX web site shows its COTS launches going out of Kwajalein. - Ed Kyle |
