Default NASA Test

The following was sent to me from my Uncle who retired from NASA.
Bill.

Subject: NASA TEST

Sometimes it DOES take a Rocket Scientist!!
(true story)

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at
the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all
traveling at maximum velocity.
The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with
airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the
windshields of their new high speed trains.

Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken
hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield,
smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console,
snapped the engineer's backrest in two and embedded itself in
the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Brits sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment,
along with the designs of the windshield and begged the US scientists
for suggestions.

NASA responded with a one-line memo:
"Defrost the chicken."

Funny to see it surface again.

I heard another story about that gun. It seems that engineers using it used
to get the chicken out of the freezer the night before and leave it to
defrost in the gun overnight, before firing in the morning. One morning,
when they fired the gun, there was a strange noise and the test results were
a bit unusual. They got the film footage of the test and went through it
one frame at a time. Still pictures showed a very startled cat hanging onto
to the chicken. Poor kitty :-)

Your friend might have been pulling your leg; or alternatively, time flies.
This one's been floating around the internet in a variety of forms for
almost a decade, maybe more - but certainly much longer than your "year or
two". And snopes.com would be interested in anything verifiable from your
friend (as long as the claim's more like 9 or 10 years), as it classifies
this urban legend as one of "indeterminate origin".

But I guess there's really a third alternative to your claim... if you
believe in prescience ;-) Regards, Brett.

Hee hee. He didn't work for them a decade ago, so I guess he altered the
story to suit. What a rotter... Clip round the ear for him, next time I
see him... I fully believed it since some of the dodgy engineering that
railtrack undertook was almost beyond belief.

Cheers
