I'm running Outlook Express on a Win98 machine. I'm trying to block these things by setting up a message rule to delete anything with an attachment. It works fine to move them automatically to my deleted message folder, but I'd like to avoid downloading them to start with. Unfortunately, selecting "don't download from server" as part of the rule doesn't seem to work. In fact, when I create a rule, the first line in its conditions reads "apply after the message is received". By then, of course, it's too late to avoid downloading it. Does anyone know how to get this right in Outlook Express? These are my rules. I built them up a little at a time, adding words each time I needed to. So you can combine some of these, but be sure you do a rule for the From, To, and Subject fields. Just to confirm this, I installed SystemWorks (a real oxymoron) and one of its components started taking 95% of the resources when the computer was "idle". SETI@Home was left out in the cold! It's probably worth installing it to fix a problem and doing an uninstall, though. -- "Forty millions of miles it was from us, more than forty millions of miles of void" Remove spam and invalid from address to reply. |

When ever you post on a newsgroup, you should use a SPAM block of some kind. I
used to use the following: starlord*inreach.com the spam software would not see it as a address to collect and if it did try using it, it never got anywhere, but now I use the FREE service of Despammed.com and their filters do a fine job of stopping spam or anything else that's not nice. For the virus you'll note I use a free virus protection on my machine and my ISP has installed virus / spam blocking software too. -- "In this universe the night was falling, the shadows were lengthening towards an east that would not know another dawn. It's not perfect, but it does have a menu item called "Selective Mail Download" which downloads only the headers and lets you dedcide which ones you want to delete from the server before downloading the whole messages. I don't remember how automated you can get with this, and you need another program for newsgroups, for which I recommend Gravity from MicroPlanet. I'm using Linux, so the thing can't infect my computer, but it can play havoc with my server and mail connection. -- Regards Fred Remove FFFf to reply, please |

I'm not worried about getting infected since I know better than to open the things (and Win98 may not be susceptible anyway), but receiving them by the hundreds is annoying. -- Steve Gray |
