About 15 miles north of the path intersection of hurricanes Charlie and Francis. Winter Haven FL. Damage fairly light this time. 100 miles from the cape, so nothing for you there. Mainly it has been damn inconvenient with two and a half days of rain, gas lines and such. OM -- "No ******* ever won a war by dying for | http://www.io.com/~o_m his country. Long time since I've posted. We made it through with no major problems.
Thanks, Steve Wachowski "OM" om@our_blessed_lady_mary_of_the_holy_NASA_researc h_facility.org wrote in message ... ...Those out there in Florida in the middle of that mess, please let us know your status if possible. My poor wussy wife, city girl that she is, panicked when the power went down for 9 hours. No A/C, and god forbid we actually have to deal with the children instead of numbing them with the TV. I thought it was great. Most of a day without all those namby-pamby "modern conveniences". I had a chance to read three Peter David novels- part of his "Psi-Man" series. Of course, when the power came back on, she started singing and dancing. Now her cordless phone works. We ought to have a mandatory power-out day once a year. Wimps. |

You're lucky it was only 9 hours. As of last night my MiL had been w/o power for 30 hours and as far as I know still doesn't have any. |

I had access to a portable welder, which doubles as a generator. If the outage had continued much longer, I'd have cranked it up, mostly to operate the fridge. Otherwise, I thought it was good to be without for a while.; If I'd had the DTs from withdrawal, I suppose I could have cranked up the fully-charged laptop We had plenty of water and canned goods, and a charcoal grill. If things got desperate, there's always the cat Only serious problem we have at the moment is that there's no school tomorrow, so I get to deal with the rugrats solo. Also, no gas. The tanks at all the stores around us that were open were drained before we got there. Fortunately, got plenty of vehicles around to siphon from if needed. Of course, as soon as the power came back on, we all took nice showers |

And I just spent the weekend *voluntarily without power*. As the fellow camped next to me said "sometimes getting out of town for the weekend isn't enough, you have to get out of the century". http://www.dragonslaire.org/Septembe...rcrown2004.htm D. -- Touch-twice life. Wimps. when (Fran?) came through Atlanta back in '95 my entire apartment complex lost power, and trees were down all through the neighborhood. I learned how to cook on a gas stove and shower in cold water by candlelight. My candyass roommate went looking for a bar with electricity. I'd say God forbid he should ever be in a really tight situation, but he'd just mooch off other people and sweet-talk them into fixing things up for him, so he's got nothing to worry about. -- Terrell Miller " A strong conviction that something must be done is the parent of many bad measures." -- Daniel Webster |

Ice storms hit Indiana really bad one year that my wife was living in a rented house at Purdue. Purdue didn't have any problems (all their power lines are buried), but the apartment didn't have power for a week. Keeping food fresh wasn't a problem (the kitchen was barely above freezing), and they had a gas stove and a gas water heater, so they actually made out o.k. They were lucky, out "in the country", some people didn't have power restored for several weeks. The only real downside (besides being a bit cold) were the huge smoke stains on the ceilings caused by a bunch of college students who didn't know how to properly adjust an oil lamp. :-) Jeff -- Remove icky phrase from email address to get a valid address. |
