[Fwd: NEWSFLASH: Contact lost with Spirit Mars Rover] (was: Spiritcommunication lost!)
Alan,
Here is the actual bulletin I received. Aside from the Subject heading, see the note in the abstract below about "recovery efforts to reestablish contact with the rover". Now, go waste someone else's time about falsifying and misrepresenting things. [Fwd: NEWSFLASH: Contact lost with Spirit Mars Rover] (was: Spirit communication lost!)
Apparently, contact has been restored, although it is a a rather slow data
rate (120 bits per second). Looks like the software got corrupted, maybe by the upload of commands sent during the Canberra thunderstorm. Clear skies to you. -- David W. David,
This is music to all of our ears. The images from the ESA orbitter are stunning and hopefully we will have lots more from Spirit and Opportunity. Anthony. The computer is resetting itself, finding a fault, then resetting itself again. It has done this over 60 times. Fortunately there is time to get information from it between reboots. It is likely that there is a real hardware failure somewhere causing the resets. It remains to be seen what has failed; and we can't say for sure what the future prospects are for the mission until it does. On a happier note, Mike Malin just released the most amazing MOC image I have ever seen. From orbit they managed to image not only the lander, but the parachute, backshell and the heatshield.
