Merchant ships carried cannon quite openly for at least a century
after the Constitution was adopted, so some people weren't.

A Man Called Intrepid, I believe. It's also a reference in a number
of other sources, such as a book I have about Military anecdotes...

Seems to SAS commando also carried a sword. When asked about the
bow and sword, he grabbed some arrows and dropped about 10 into a small
area some 100 yards away. He pointed out that that would be very useful
when taking out an outpost. Even if he missed, how would the sentries
act when arrows were raining down? When asked about his sword, he
replied that a gentleman always carries a sword.
