Land of Mt. Hood and the Source of the East Wind

At first I felt a little lost, but then I came upon a spot I clearly remembered. It was where I had gone out there and watched a speech by then President Jimmy Carter in the late 70's. He was the first President I had seen in person! A helicopter brought him in, and Iranian students hiding their faces were demonstrating against the Shaw of Iran.

I finally found the lake that they made by damming up the local creek. I once drove a car across that dam! But if I were to try it now, I would run into a fence. I now must give up any hope of wetting a line in that trout stocked pond, as fishing is now limited to those under 17. Well, that's how I always thought it should be.

I found the basketball court with the dome shaped roof. It is a paraboloid shaped roof which gives an interesting echoic effect at its center. They have wisely covered much of the ceiling with acoustic tile.

There used to be tables and chairs on the east side where students could sit. But now it's all basketball floor. That's were I used to sit and talk with Greta and Susan in those pleasant times.

I went to the corner of Kane Dr. and Stark St. to look for the stone mile post marker for mile 14 from Portland. It was there back in 1969 when I checked. This were set down every mile along Stark about 150 years ago. Stark led to the Stark St. Ferry, which was the only way to cross the Willamette River back then, before they built the bridges in Portland. The Community College has put up a sign at that corner and surrounded it with rocks and other landscaping. But no sign of the historic mile stone. You would think that the administrators of a college of all people would have some respect for history!

AA Its as dry as a comet close to the Sun here.Hot too. Misty smog as the Sun comes up. ts even to hot at the beaches.Best to take two showers a day anf stay indoors. well its hotter in Vegas. TreBert

Now 96F as of 5:30 PM here. I feel just fine in this air conditioned library. Started reading a book on great feuds in mathematics.

A cooler day here Gresham. Marine air has returned after a couple of hot and smokey days. Currently 75F and sunny. Expected high of 78F. Yesterday it was again 96F.

Had my usual lunch with Kim at the buffet. Finding out more about her in her ranbling tales. She once owned and managed a restaurant called Shirley's Castle in Hawaii where she had 70 employees. (Shirley was her American name.)

I showed her some pictures of when I was in Washinton D.C., and snapped a photo of Teddy Kennedy outside the Capitol.

Scattered clouds here in Gresham. As of 1:00 PM it is 70F. Expected high only 75F. Tomorrow it is expected to be 91F.

Some guy comes in the library here and makes a lot of noise, grunting and such with occasional obscenities. In a more reverend age it would be reasonably concluded that he was possessed by a demon, and that would be that. But in our age when everything has to be scientific, he just tells people he has Tourettes Syndrom, and he gets a pass. Yesterday he was exceptionally noisy, and people were complaining. He refused to go to the lab room to do his computer accessing. The second time a librarian came to talk to him, he just jumped up, yelled, "**** IT!" and walked out.

Today I saw him on the bus while coming to the library. He wasn't quite as noisy as usual. Maybe he took a double dose of his seditive! I'm glad he got off somemwhere else! The guy really needs a good exorcist!

AA No money for mental hospitals. It would cost $1,000,000 each year to take care of these people.I fear medicare has so much stolen by doctors that its going to come to an end in 5 years. I just paid my share of that operation so I now have indoor plumbing.Pee-Aire said it was worth every penny.It cost $$$$$$$ big bucks. AA USA is living like people on credit cards only worse.It can print paper money that is backed by ****. TreBert

Yes, our government is almost 20 trillion dollars in debt now! Laid end to end, 20 trillion dollar bills would reach from the Earth to the Sun 20 tines! Can they ever pay that all back? No way!

It is extremely smokey today here in Gresham. An unseasonable east wind is blowing smoke from forest fires in eastern Oregon down the Columbia River Gorge and into here and into Portland! I can never remember a day like this in my lifetime, though the oldtimers talked of such days back in the 30s or 40s due to forest fires back then. The sky is covered with snoke so that the sun can barely shine through! You can smell the smoke. It tickles the lungs and burns the eyes! Also, I cannot remember an east wind this strong in August, except maybe once back in the late 50s. Makes me wonder if the fires have something to do with creating the wind!

Currently it is 81F as of 1:30 here. Expected high is 90F, if the sun can shine through the smoke enough to get it that high!

Hope the smoke alarms don't start going off! Anybody who already has lung problems here is in the wrong place today!

AA Going up to 100 clear sky and little rain.Farmers growin g less but profits are up with high prices. with 4 years without rain,and all this dry heat its amazing all is green. Terbert

They must be pumping in irrigation water from somewhere. Here they are draining the lakes to fight the forest fires!

Sunny here in Gresham through a smokey haze. As of 3:30 PM it is now 80F.

Over to get more stuff from my locker today. Today I made it over and back in only 4 hours and 45 minutes. Too bad I just couldn't find anything I could rent that was any closer.

The DOW is way down, but so is gold. Hey, that's not how it's supposed to work!
