Nothing "happened". Mars makes a close approach to earth every two years. It
just so happened that this time the orbits lined up just right so that the
approach was a few million miles closer than usual. That's all.

That happens every time the earth overtakes Mars. This particular
overtaking incident happens to coincide with Mars being at the perihelion
(closest to Sun) part of its' orbit. Sorry, no email.
