It is the only way to escape from the surface radiation noise.

Only neutrinos and dark matter can penetrate that much rock. All the
materials used in the experiments shields are either pre WWII smelt or
zone refined and tested exhaustively for background radiation levels.

One thing they didn't mention which I presume would be the same at
Sudbury as in any other ultra deep mine is that the tunnel walls are at
roughly 35C so that the hike to the lab in protective gear is hard work
as is working in a clean room environment bunny suit (although they may
well have some environmental control for the experimental rooms).

I got the chance to go down Boulby potash mine last year to visit the
dark matter detectors there in the deepest mine in the UK.

Everything tastes of salt for a couple of days afterwards. The lab
itself is inside a clean room portacabin in the deepest part.
