Default "Frozen Smoke"

Its called aerogel. A person size block of aerogel weighing a pound can
can hold half a ton. This matterial has left Earth and is on its way
to incounter the comet called Wild-2 in the year 2004,240 million miles
from Earth. The space craft will deploy panels of aerogel. Small
particles from the comet's coma will slam into the aerogel at speeds of
14,000 mph. Aerogel is the only material that can bring these tiny
bullets to a stop with little damage, These captured dust particles
will be return to Earth in the year 2006. I found this interesting, and
hope you did to. Bert

I've actually seen aeorgel. It's very weird because it was in obvious cubes,
but the cubes had no discernable edges.

More info at: stardust.jpl.nasa.gov

Hi Kilolani Does aerogel look like styrofoam ?I know it is made out of
silicon dioxide.(glass) This aerogel hold the world's record in fourteen
physical properties.(great stuff for space) Well if it brings back the
dust from Wild 2 comet from outer space it will be the first time this
has happened since Apollo 17 brought back Moon rocks from the Moon.
Apollo in older times brought back rocks(big brains) Nasa today
hopefully will bring back comet dust (small brains) Still it is better
than nothing. Bert

Bert asks,
Does aerogel look like styrofoam?

Hey Bert, take a deep breath, hold your nose, go to www.google.com ,
type in 'aerogel', and voil=E5- you get
http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/tech/aerogel.html
oc

"It is described abstractly in mathematical language, _but not
explained_."

Hi oc I held my nose, and the site you sent me to shows "frozen smoke"
and it did not go up my nose, but did enter my brain(thank you) oc if
the stuff is made from a form of silicon dioxide it will be made cheap.
It is a great insulator, for it is being used in the Mars rovers. Part of
my company here in Florida does insulating, and that is another reason
I'm interested in this material. Things sell when you say it is used by
NASA.(how about those NASA mattresses) Light and strong, can you ask for
more? Bert

No, it doesn't look anything like styrofoam. It looks more like Jell-o, but
again... the cubes have no discernable edges. It's hard to explain, but once
you see it, you'll never forget it.

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what do rocks and dust have to do with brains?

Of course the really interesting part is that nobody has figured out how to
get the particles OUT of the astrogel.

So if you have a good idea, you have another 3 years to let NASA know.

Hi Kilolani Never be afraid to ask. I was using comet dust as not as
difficult to bring back to Earth in the year 2006,and the 830 pounds of
rock that the Apollo in the early 70s brought back to Earth.NASA had the
right stuff (brains) 35 years ago. NASA brain today is a few grams of
dust. Kilolani the nice thing about these probes of today's NASA is
there is no way people can be killed. My advice to NASA is to take out
a 32 million dollar life insurance policy for each astronaut.that is
what NASA pays for a toilet. Bert PS Well Kilolani now I know what
the "gel" stands for in aerogel

Ummm.... well, they sort of want to get the particles out of the aerogel w/o
in any way damaging or contaminating them.
