there was a letter to *Physics Today*, recently,
taking the Nobel cmte. to task for jumping the gun
on this bizaar matter. just a couple of days ago,
the LATimes had an editorial about this, offhandedly stating that
"Universe will eventually expand faster than the speed
of light" -- but not its velocity!

In 1998 they discovered that the universe is accelerating in its
expansion. It does not seem to be collapsing to a singularity, but
instead accelerating in its expansion. This negates your thesis

Actually, I think it is the opposite, intelligence is caused by and
will cause the expansion of the universe.

The universe is presently expanding. The farther things are away from
us the faster they are receeding from us. At some distance away, space
is receeding faster than light. This is our cosmological horizon
beyond which we cannot see. This cosmological horizon acts like the
event horizon of a black hole. And just like black holes there is a
relationship between the surface area of the horizon and the entropy
inside the horizon. It's curious to note that it seems that just as
the universe started to accelerate in its expansion about 5 billion
years ago, life on earth began.

Life can be seen as a complex, information storing structure that
seems to defy the 2nd law of theromdynamics which states that
everything tends towards a more disordered state. So the question is
what entropy decreasing mechanism would be responsible for life. Some
think there is an Intelligence Designer intervening in the universe.
But it may be the acceleration of universal expansion forcing the
cosmological horizon to contract causing its surface area to shrink
causing the entropy inside it to be reduced and resulting in life.

Now if intelligence is also considered a complex structure, then
perhaps an increase in intelligence and knowledge can be seen as an
entropy reduction and may be accompanied by a further strinking of the
cosmological horizon which can only be caused by even faster
expansion.

Below is an article that I wrote. It concerns the Omega Point
cosmology by physicist and mathematician Prof. Frank J. Tipler, which
is a proof of God's existence based upon the most reserved view of the
known laws of physics (i.e., the Second Law of Thermodynamics, General
