Why did the Egyptians built those pyramids?

Because they wanted. Because building that was great fun. They KNEW that
their work would stay forever.

No, building those pyramids was anything but fun for the people
dragging the big blocks of rock in the hot sun - it was only the
egotism of the Pharaohs that motivated the building of those
structures.

There are better reasons, fortunately, for sending men into space, but
we have to find them again.

That is a mistake that doesn't stand historical analysis. The pyramid of
Cheops was covered with white stones with hieroglyphs from all the
groups of people that left their signature in their work.

In the 17th century (if my memory serves) there was an earthquake in
Cairo and people took those stones to rebuild their homes and all
those messages were lost, but some have survived, testifying of
the joy of those that built that. There wasn't any sarcophagus in
the pyramid, at least that of Cheops, the biggest. It wasn't built
for the pharaoh but he organized that.

In those times manipulation of masses of people was very difficult.
There was only knives to force people to obey, and a rebellion
(as the ones that regularly occurred during the reign of the pharaohs)
was impossible to contain. No, those people weren't forced to do
anything. They did it because they all WANTED to build something
that will stand for all eternity.

You can't build something so delicately built with so much craftsmanship
with slaves or with people that do not want to do what they are
forced to do.

There are better reasons, fortunately, for sending men into space, but
we have to find them again.

No, they are the same:

Fun.

Let's do something that will fire our imagination and will stand
the test of time. Let's do something for our great great grandchildren.

Let's go to those places no man has ever dream of. Let's go to the stars.

Well, the money was good
