This is incorrect. As far back as October 1914, the Zeppelin L-55 reached a
height of 24,000 feet (after it engaged in an 11-ship airship bombing
attack against England during WWI; the airships encountered 45 to 50 mph
winds and 5 of the 11 ships were lost).

I've got a fair number of books about airships on my bookshelf and based on
their reading, I can say that the Wikipedia article is relatively well done
and worth reading to clear up some misconceptions:

If you don't have a copy yet, get "The Zeppelin In Combat" by Douglas H.
Robinson.
This is a _superb_ book with several hundred great vintage photos*, and
was originally published several decades ago with the input and full
cooperation of the German W W I Zeppelin veterans.
This is _the_ book on German Zeppelin operations in the First World War:

And it has very high quality paper in it, and a superb and tough binding
on it as well.
Meanwhile, Luftschiff fans, der Kaiser orders you to get your 3D glasses
out and get a look at just how big these airships were, via vintage
stereo-opticon views of them; particularly check out the view looking
into the interior of the horizontal tail fin...as that one will knock

* What's wonderful about those photos is that thanks to the camera
technology of the era, the best photos were taken using a huge film
emulsion plate rather than film on a roll, and the fidelity of the
photos is superb due to that fact. The book has two-whole-page sized
reproductions of some of them, and the level of detail visible is amazing.
They used top-grade semi-gloss paper for the book, and thank God they
did, because it really lets the the photos be seen in their original
full glory.

....And then there was the unmade Hammer film "Zepplin v.
Pteredactyls", which had a pair of Zeps attempting to rescue an
expedition to a "Kong-class" island, only to find it guarded by
pteredactyls. Hammer went bankrupt while this was in pre-production,
but IIRC the plan was to use stop-motion directed by a couple of
former Harryhousen animators. This one might have been campy enough to
have become a cult favorite!

There seems to be some disagreement on the facts. The raid he's
referring to was actually in 1917, not 1914. The actual altitude (an
all time record for airships that stood until August of this year,
when it was surpassed by a Russian airship) was 24,606 feet. L-55 was
one of the five airships lost in the raid he mentioned. The other
four were shot down over France while returning from the raid. L-55
crashed in central Germany due to damage sustained because of the
excessive altitude, which she maintained over France to avoid the
fighters.
