Presuming we know exactly what it is that we're wiping out, and that it's
things similar to slime mold, extensive samples of which are held in
laboratories on Mars, Earth and other places, I'd have to come down on the
side of letting the creatures go extinct in the wild. I'm somewhat
uncomfortable with that conclusion, but perhaps that's appropriate.

I'd prefer to preserve them somehow, but not leave them an entire
planet as habitat.

"Maybe it's something we can transplant...."

Sorry, couldn't resist.

as I doubt very many Earth microorganisms would
survive on Mars if brought there unintentionally by an expedition

Not so. Mircroorganisms are extremely tough, and not just the
extremeophiles. Many can form spores to ride out bad conditions and
wait for good ones - then breed -very- quickly during short-lived good
conditions. We most likely have already put Earth microbes on Mars
that may not be breeding, but are certainly surviving.

Hands off Milla Jovovich, and her strange metallic red hair as shown in
the new Feria commercial! On a related topic, what does Tamas Feher do
when he's not investigating ancient super civilizations? Why restore
Austro-Hungarian ironclads of course:
http://www.oz.net/~markhow/pre-dred/leitha.htm Tamas has had the
foresight to ready the Hungarian monitor Leitha for the imminent Martian
invasion that shall descend like the king of terrors later this month
(as predicted by Nostradamus; as was Bill Clinton's infidelity, and
Prince Charles' loss of a thing deeply loved by him....his favorite Polo
Mallet); and like the "Thunder Child", the plucky little ironclad shall
defend the Danube and Budapest with it's very life....holding up the
Martian advance for well over ten seconds... until the loathsome
tripods, hooting maniacally over it's scorched hulk and toasted crew,
can be lulled into a false sense of confidence...only to encounter their
doom as one after another, they are electrocuted by caffeine-crazed
maniacal trolley bus drivers hurling their sparking mounts into the
tripod's steel feet like Living Socialist Thunderbolts!
