Let me ask again. *Where in that paper are they talking about beaming

Scanned quickly (through the entire 72 page document), I couldn't find
mention of it. The full document is available he

Eh hum.. the executive summary states the whole point is finding
*...revolutionary...science and technology concerning energy.
And the...only thing...it identifies as "revolutionary" just happens
to be....

"...and revolutionary new services such as in-space power beaming
and on-orbit refueling."

Yes indeed, energy beaming from space platform to other space
platforms or assisting interplanetary missions will at first be the
most advantageous, although space to ground beaming isn't such a far
stretch once the infrastructure is in place and there's a surplus of
clean energy to do stuff with.

However, direct fusion energy would still be a whole lot better for
obtaining and using energy on demand.

Wouldn't that then be "space to ground" power beaming? "In-space"
suggests (to me anyway) pt-pt power beaming in space - ie source
and destianation in space.

Right, in-space, first the idea must crawl before it can walk.
Space Solar Power is about solar power collected in space
Where it goes is another subject g

The point being, just five years ago, hardly anyone was even
talking about SSP in any serious way.

It is all well and good to have enthusiasm, but do be careful about it
leading you to count unhatched eggs. Or perhaps something about the
relative positioning of the rocket nozzle and the capsule as a
varition of carts and horses.

It is not a question of half full or empty - the glass has a leak.
The real question is "Can it be patched?"
these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway...
feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hp.com but NOT BOTH...
