"Russia Rocket Takes Off on 16-Day Mission"

"MOSCOW - A Russian rocket carrying a satellite laboratory blasted off
from Kazakhstan's Baikonur cosmodrome Tuesday on a 16-day mission.

Russia's Federal Space Agency said the Soyuz-U rocket was launched at 8
a.m. EDT and entered orbit 10 minutes later.

The European Space Agency said the Foton-M2 research satellite carries
some 850 pounds of equipment to conduct more than 20 chemical, physical
and biotechnological experiments."

space.com lists the experiments aboard:

Many of the scientific investigations finding their way to space aboard
the Foton are being reflown after their Foton-M1 capsule was destroyed
when its Soyuz booster exploded seconds after liftoff in October 2002.
All the experiments on the failed flight are on this mission with the
exception of a French biological incubator and a few student
experiments, European Space Agency Foton project manager Antonio Verga
told Spaceflight Now.

An applicable technology demonstration called Favorite - for Fixed
Alkaline Vapor Oxygen Reclamation In-flight Technology Experiment -
will test a new way to generate oxygen from water molecules.

The "Favorite" experiment was noted is sci.space.station in an Elektron
thread.

There is also an instrument duplicating the heat pipe experiment lost
on Columbia's last flight.

A student sub-satellite had to be omitted for funding reasons.
