Fwd: Physics - The Twists and Turns of the Dynamo Effect
-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Physics - The Twists and Turns of the Dynamo Effect Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2012 00:00:43 -0500 From: Sam Wormley Newsgroups: sci.physics http://physics.aps.org/articles/v5/40 Magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the universe. The Earth has a magnetic field that turns a magnetic needle into a useful navigational tool. Other planets, the Sun, and most stars generate their own magnetic fields. It is commonly accepted that most celestial bodies maintain magnetic fields through the dynamo effect: conversion of the kinetic energy of an electrically conducting, but electrically neutral, fluid or plasma into magnetic energy. |

There is a convergence of planetary spherical deviation, plate tectonics and geomagnetism using the uneven rotational gradient of the fluid interior and much of it was developed on this forum. The last piece added to the picture was a nice one,Venus has no real spherical deviation,no active crustal motion/evolution other than volcanism and CME's expose a very weak magnetic field which indicates all three planetary features are linked using differential rotation hence it is permissible to make decent planetary comparisons to arrive at a more productive conclusion for the Earth's surface features and very active crust. The original Physical Transactions are a thrilling read, like they were almost written by detectives on the trail of a crime , a description of expert mountaineers up a new peak or a new country to be explored and I have kept true to that spirit. I now watch ham- fisted attempts to come in and throw the kitchen sink at the fluid dynamics of the interior whereas it was developed here in this forum with the barest of objections if not a great deal of comment. It is possible to assert rotation causes plate tectonics however the convergence of three planetary traits using a common mechanism and especially using planetary comparisons is a much better way to approach the topic. There are still a few participants around now who sneered at the original proposal back in 2005 when there was nothing but 'convection cells' while today the rotational mechanism is seen as a matter of course but readers must be well aware that ,despite the awful lack of attribution, the whole endeavor relies on an accurate value for the maximum equatorial speed and that will not be forthcoming anytime soon. |
