Giant Magellan Telescope-spun mirror query
Visited Mt Hopkins MMT in the 1980s and read the GMT at http://www.gmto.org/ will mimic this 7 mirror cluster principle but focus directly to a single point via 6 off-axis surrounding mirrors.
How are off-axis 8.4m mirrors spuncast? I understand the principle for on-axis casting but what sort of turntable needed for off-axis spinning? I'm guessing 26m [= final scope diameter!] or am I missing something? Nytecam Last edited by nytecam : October 3rd 05 at 12:18 AM. |
