Foucault's pendulum
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Foucault-rotz.gif
"Animation of a Foucault pendulum at the Pantheon in Paris (48°52' North), with the earth's rotation rate greatly exaggerated. The green trace shows the path of the pendulum bob over the ground (a rotating reference frame), while the blue trace shows the path in a frame of reference rotating with the plane of the pendulum." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foucault_pendulum That explanation is entirely in error even though the graphics are correct, so it would seem, even in the absence of any values ignoring the latitude variation and just working with the daily rotation of the Earth and a freely swinging pendulum, there is still a better explanation to be had. Anyone wish to take a crack at putting the graphics in proper perspective ?. |
