Stronger Steel
Since I happened to be posting stuff on Pulse Detonation Engines,
which heavily tax their materials due to the terrible cylical mechanical and thermal stresses which can cause fractures, I thought I would post this little article mentioning a new advance in higher-strength steel: http://www.physicsweb.org/article/news/7/7/14 So basically, it says that smaller nano-particles are able to strengthen the steel in its weak spots, but it's not quite clear on whether the new steel has only a slight amount of carbon in it, or whether it has just slightly more carbon in it than regular steel. I wonder whether PDEs would be made of steel to begin with, but in any case, a much stronger steel could make itself a strong candidate. |
