Should I be selling my equipment and buying a dob now that we are
facing a massive looming recession?

Starliner, Cave, Coulter and Unitron all died in the last recession ...
who will be the casualty this time?

Why??? If the recession doesn't happen then you've lost your fun. Even if
there is one, selling your stuff just robs you of the fun of using it.
As far as I am concerned, stuff like telescopes are heirlooms that ought to
be in the family forever so that all can enjoy the stuff.
BTW, is it really a recession if you don't join in it?

What proof do you have that a recession is imminent? I presume that you
already own it free and clear, so selling it for a dob may result in a
profit, but are you sure you'll need the extra cash? A recession
shouldn't make a difference unless you suffer personally.

I was the ad guy at Astronomy magazine and can tell you for a fact that
Cave and Coulter did not go under because of a recession.

What *proof* does anyone ever have, before the fact?

Economic indicators show a recession is a distinct possibility--what
else can be asked for?

I typed that in a hurry and in rereading it I felt that the wording of
my response may have seemed harsh. I meant to suggest that no one can
predict a recession with certainty, but whether it arrives or not Mr. M
already owns his equipment so it will not cost him anything other than
slight operational expenses. Selling it and buying a dob may provide him
with some cash, but unless he needs the cash for expenses during the
hypothetical recession there is no reason to get rid of his present
equipment.

I Don't know about a recession, but I think there will be more used big
dobs on the market for two reasons:
1. Gas prices will make it too expensive to drive out with the 25 inch
monster every time you want to use it, and ,
2. A lot of folks are getting older and just don't want to handle
anything that big any more.

The other things that could happen is a big push for trailer mounted big
dobs that should take care of item 2 to a certain extent and people down
sizing upon retirement to a condo and buying a spot out in the country
to house the big dob or EQ mounted high quality set up.

Whoa!! Stop right there! Can you put me in touch with a few of those
people who are /not/ getting older so that I can learn their secret?
Thanks!
