Sun Shadow Investigation Project
This is an open invitation to participate in the Sun Shadow Investigation
Project. This endeavor, SunShIP, is what typically is known as an Eratosthenes Project. Students from around the globe will be duplicating the efforts of Erastothenes, a Librarian that measured the Earth's circumference using the angle of the Sun at two different locations. During the equinox week, 20-24 September, but especially on the 22nd, the date of the September equinox, please join me and 6th grade students at Colegio Menor San Francisco de Quito in Quito Ecuador, as we measure the mid-day altitude of the Sun, and observe shadows throughout the day. We will post pictures of these observations on the SunShIP web site, as well as other pictures sent in by participants. The goal of SunShIP is to collect, for comparison, pictures of shadows taken at mid-day from different latitudes; and also the local measurements of the Earth's circumference as calculated from different latitudes. Please share this information about the project with other educators. To learn more about the project and how to participate visit the Sun Shadow Investigation Project web site: http://sunship.currentsky.com Clear Skies.
