Why, the maker's mark for one, "Alvan Clarke &
Sons," but of course by this day and age the engraving
would be filled in with paint and crud. Also, the tubes are
of solid brass, finely-machined.

The University of Mississippi in Oxford placed an order
for an Alvan Clarke refractor; an 18.5-inch no less, but the
War of the Northern Aggression ensued and it was never
delivered...

"In the meantime, a member of the Committee, Mr. Mixer,
learned of a...great telescope left upon the hands of Mr.
Clarke by the University of Mississippi, in consequence
of the breaking out of the war of rebellion."

The University of Chicago later stole it.

Had the University of Mississippi never placed the order,
that particular Alvan Clarke would never have come into
being.

We want it back.

exactly why Grant made sure Jackson was taken first. so maybe the scope would
