Default Federation chooses alternate tourist

MOSCOW TIMES
Tuesday, August 22, 2006. Issue 3480. Page 2.

Japanese Man Fails Space Test
Combined Reports
A Japanese businessman seeking to become the world's fourth space tourist
has failed a medical test and cannot fly to the international space
station next month, a space official said Monday.

Daisuke "Dice-K" Enomoto, 34, was to be launched in a Soyuz vehicle from
the Baikonur Cosmodrome with the next space station crew on Sept. 14.

"I cannot give you the precise details of the medical checks, but it
looks like Iranian-born U.S. businesswoman Anousheh Ansari will fly
instead of him," Federal Space Agency spokesman Igor Panarin said.

"I believe the state commission will approve Ansari's flight by the end
of this week," Panarin said.

Ansari would be the world's fourth space tourist and would fly with U.S.
commander Miguel Lopez-Alegria and Russian flight engineer Mikhail
Tyurin.

Makes you wonder if we all had to have that medical, how many of us would
discover some health issue, hitherto unknown.

Interesting.

Why? Doesn't he have cancellation insurance?

Quite seriously, the Russians, being good capitalists, probably kept some
portion to cover expenses and as "earnest" money.

That would be fair IMO.

It's not a single payment anyway. The boy-band kiddie got kicked off
training for not coming up with the next installment.

Space Adventures (and through them, the Russians) will also sell
varying levels of "cosmonaut training" without a flight.

This sounds very interesting. I was an astronaut instructor for NASA for
several years. Just going through the training and being an instructor was
GREAT!!! In the long run I might have had a better time than if I had flown
as an astronaut.

If I had the money, I would LOVE to go through Russian astronaut training.
Only problem is they have such a funny alphabet in their written documents
:-)

I love the Russian space program. They do so much more per money spent than
we do. I also think the Soyuz is MUCH safer than Shuttle.
