I've looked through a couple of these that Markus L. had, and yes, they

Also know of a couple of other friends that own these. I liked this
eyepiece, but just didn't feel like lightening my pocketbook of $1600 to
get one.

Shop around. I paid substantially less than $1600 for one.

M42 looks terrific through the Leitz 30mm 88* AFOV EP in my AP 10" Mak-Cass.

I hate to say this, but M42 looks terrific through just about any scope with
any eyepiece. Heck, it's not even half bad through a $50 WalMart refractor
with 25mm MA eyepiece and a plastic barlow...

Hi Rich, But weren't these 30mm 88 deg eyepieces actually assembled by
another company using the Leitz glass?

I thought I remembered that it was B+W that actually made these, and not
Leitz.

The B&W ep was manufactured by reverse engineering the glass and
optical prescription for the lens. The B&W lenses were not manufactured
with the same level of polish on the lenses, nor with the same coatings.

Perhaps Markus can comment here, as I'm sure Markus has had dozens of
these in his posession.

I've looked through a couple of these that Markus L. had, and yes, they
were quite nice.
Also know of a couple of other friends that own these. I liked this
eyepiece, but just didn't feel like lightening my pocketbook of $1600 to
get one.

At that time, Markus also had on hand, an odd Zeiss Eyepiece of
comparable quality, and FL.
It was also a great eyepiece too, and virtually indentical in
performance versus the Leitz..
Mark D.

I happen to have one of the Zeiss lenses, and on my F/8 and F/10 scopes
they are just fine, exceeding my 31mm Nagler*. It is, however, a dog on
my F/4 scope where the 31mm Nagler blows it away.

The Leitz (thanks for spelling correction) is supposed to be corrected
down into the F/5 range whiel the Ziess is corrected into the F/6 range.
[*] the focus at the center of the FOV is simply better in the Ziess
than the 31mm Nagler, the edge a little worse. I don't exactly know why,
but it is less tireing to look through the 30mm Ziess for hours at a
time than it is to look through the Nagler for hours at a time. Could
be the position of the exit pupil, the aberation of the exit pupil, or
the msmoothness of lens polish and coatings that make the difference.

Jon, I have many fine telescopes (6 apos, 2 large Dobs and the AP Mak-Cass).
The view through the AP10 MCT and the Leitz EP is breathtaking. If you
prefer to use the WalMart refractor, that's great. g

The one I have is quite good. It does not perform very well w/fast scopes
though. However, at f/14.6 in a 10" scope, it is a dandy. In that
instrument, I prefer it to the 26mm Nagler and 35mm PanOptic.

From what I've heard, you've spent a lot more than $1.2K on astro things.

Just pointing out that M42 is breathtaking through most any scope and under the
right conditions, even a $50 Walmart refractor.

The original thread was about most valuable OOP EPs. This subthread
discussed the Leitz 30mm 88* AFOV EP. I doubt that EP would work well with a
$50 Walmart refractor. For that matter, I doubt that the low cost scope will
accept 2" EPs.

My point was simply that commenting that M42 was breathtaking does not say
much, its just about always breath taking regardless of scope or eyepiece.

Thats all....

I should have qualified it better, but let's not get carried away
w/suggesting that M42 looks breathtaking in a $50 refractor, particularly
when I mentioned the view through a superb 10" scope. The nebula looks
interesting in my 92mm f/5 StowAway, but I wouldn't call it breathtaking in
comparison to what it looks like in the AP 10" Mak-Cass (the scope I
originally mentioned using w/the Leitz EP).

With the combination I originally mentioned, the 6 major stars in the
Trapezium are tight pinpricks and the visual impression is that one could
drive a truck through E and its brighter companion (ditto for the F). The
transmittance of the Leitz permits more faint pastel colors to be perceived
in the gas cloud (during nights with very good transparency). Seemingly fair
stars in the heart of the nebulosity are more obvious w/the Leitz than w/my
TV 26 Nagler. The Leitz is expensive, but it seems to be a good match for my
AP10" Mak-Cass. It's a keeper.
