Carl Schurz Pk - MH - clearsky starviewing - Carl Schurz Pk - MH - clearsky sunviewing - Freeport - LI - Amat Obsrs Soc lecture - www.aosny.org Great Kills Pk - SI - starviewing - , 718-494-1370 Jenny Jump St Pk - NJ - Utd Astr Clubs NJ mtg - www.uacnj.org Sat - R Moses St Pk - LI - clearsky starviewing - www.aosny.org. Voorhees St Pk - NJ - clearsky sunviewing - www.njaa.org Washtn Xing - NJ - clearsky starviewing - www.princetonastronomy.org General news ---------- December meetings of many astroclubs are yearend celebrations, rather than lectures or shows. Moreover, the meeting may be at a site other than the usual one, like a restaurant, not specificly stated in announcements to hand when I compile NYC Events. For the most part, visitors are welcome anyway. Please check with the club's contact first before going to a December meeting. Some events are within a property, typicly a museum, that has an admission fee. The 'free' or '$xx' charge noted in NYC Events is that AFTER getting into the host property. Some parks where specific public sessions are held are also used by stargazers on other dates under stipulations set by each park. BEFORE availing of the park for such extra stargazing, learn from the contact about these stipulations. If the park finds you on its grounds outside of public sessions without satisfying its terms of use, you may be removed from the property. This admonition is a fallout from the ongoing revision of access to various lands across the country. The NYSkies calendar section and NYC Events now are essentially congruent. An event missed in NYC Events or or an existing one has substantial change, it is tagged with '(CLICK)'. The event's details and contact are behind your mouse click. Print the calendar in landscape mode to avoid clipping off the far right days. The website for Long Island Space Society is www.lispace.org, not www.liss.org. The latter is for Live Internet Seismic Server, a nonastronomy -- tho pretty interesting geological -- service. The College of Staten Island Observatory and Stamford Observatory both have a $3 admission for all their public nights, not just for special sessions. Skywatching --------- November had two major visitors in our skies, asteroid Hermes and comet Encke. Altho both were a bit dim for most City scopes, some of us did catch sight of either or both. By early November Hermes was faded well beyond City astronomers and Encke by late November receded into evening twilight. Two special events were lost to us. The Leonids were a washout on the morning of November 19th. It rained in some places; others got just deep overcast. The other missed event was the Moon's occultation of gamma Virginis on the morning of November 20th. Thin cloud and bright dawn veiled it. Despite these setbacks, NYSkiers carpooled to Wilcox Park on Friday the 21st and to Voorhees State Park on the 22nd. They got pleasing clear skies and did some excellent starviewing with the host clubs. New Jersey Astronomical Association hosted them at Voorhees; Mid Hudson Astronomical Association, Wilcox. We had one sighting of northern lights! On October 29-30, we got a strong white glow in the north and northeast from the massive solar storm that slammed Earth that afternoon and evening. The aurora struck most of the United States and many overseas places, sometimes with very spectacular displays. On November 20-21 an other round of aurora sweeped over Earth, but it missed the City. We were looking, based on solar storm alerts, but saw no aurora. The storm apparently missed the northern US and gave strong displays to the southern latitudes. Both Venus and Saturn came into easy view in our evening skies. Yes, NYSkiers were following both for a couple months, but now they are out in more convenient hours. SOme of us are getting revved up for the Venus transit, in next June!, as we see Venus winding up for her grand promenade across the evening sky. The precession culminates with her mad dash toward the Sun in May, and then, bang!, she slides across the solar disc. Saturn attains his perihelic opposition on December 31st, with the rings still almost fully open. He's the 'new' star in Gemini about half between Betelgeuse and Castor-Pollux. Special Events ------------ NYSkiers on November 18th flocked to New York Institute of Technology near Columbus Circle for Dr Edward Belbruno's talk on NASA's human space exploration plans. On the morning of his talk he took badly ill and cancelled out. Some of us went for lunch and chat across the street in the cafeteria of Fordham University. I include this year the most famous tree lighting in the world, at Rockefeller Center on December 3rd. And one on December 2nd at City Hall. There's little astronomy in them, except a strained relation to the Star of Bethlehem. These events are part of the cultural fabric of the planet and are a favorite treat to attend. The two take place in confined spaces, the front of City Hall and the plaza at Rockefeller Continued in next message. --- þ RoseReader 2.52á P005004 |

Center. Only a few myriads of spectators have clear view of the lighting, so stake out your spot early! December 2003 is the 100th anniversary of the first powered airplane flight by the Wright's in North Carolina. All year there were exhibits, like the one in August at Rockefeller Center. Now we have a series of talks in various City parks and at the Science, Industry, Business Library. The ones in the parks are all the same presentation, spaced around the City so everyone gets a chance to hear them. The American Museum of Natural History's SuperSaver ticket is now $32, with a couple extra features, up from previous $29. New York ------ November saw happy times in the City! On the 19th the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation unveiled the finalist eight designs for the World Trade Center memorial. These are now on display in the Winter Garden, World Finance Center during December for you to inspect, comment, and vote. The plans embody the four classical elements of the world: earth (bedrock, bathtub walls), fire (lamps, sunlight), water (pools, cascades), air (open sky). All in one way or other honor each of the 2,900 victims of the Twin Tower collapse and those from the 1993 attack; a couple include specific remembrance of the 92 countries represented among the victims. I visited Winter Garden a few days after the unveiling. The plans are exhibited in dioramas around the walls and in museum-style cases. Go to the main level of Winter Garden, where the bamboo trees grow, and walk under and behind the curved stairs. From there you can go on the patio overlooking Ground Zero to visualize the designs. On November 22nd, the World Trade Center station of the Hudson Tubes, or PATH, reopened! It's a temporary depot, replacing the rail works squashed out of existence by the collapse. I inspected it on the 26th, when many businesses let out early for Thanksgiving, so the crowds were thinned out by evening when I got there. The main entry is a barebones pavilion on Church Street facing St Paul's Chapel. It's ringed by chest-high bollards as buffers against, erm, errant cars. The lights are shielded and recessed into the canopy, supported by simple trusses and tubular pillars. I skip the details, but the depot has two levels. The first is that of the late shopping concourse. The second is, as far as I can suss out, a recreation of the old fare control hall. The two are connected by the apparently same arrangement of eightish escalators as in the late terminal. The entire place is ambient with the outside air. The walls have open grill sections where you can look into the campus as never before allowed to the public. It was chilly that evening. I needed my coat while deep inside the depot; metal fixtures were cold to the touch. There is no HVAC at all, being that this is a remporary station. There is only one convenience in the whole place, a small Hudson News stall for newspapers and snacks. The only decorations are photo murals of Lower Manhattan scenes on various walls. Signs every where proclaim the validity of pay-per-ride subway MetroCards. These are the ones you continually refill with money as fares are nicked off for each ride. The unlimited cards don't work. PATH promises to moxie the turnstiles to accept them by next spring. Despite the holiday, there were several hundred people in the halls, interfering somewhat with my photography. No one intercepted me, altho there were lots of PATH workers and agents milling around. I examined the new passages to the IND subways. It restores the entrance at the bumpers, until now all boarded over. One emotional feature at this entrance is a swath of original marble pavement, with scuffs from the debris shoved along it during the collapse! During some errands by day I wandered thru Wall Street. After World Trade Center the area was laced with highway barriers, guard booths, obstacle vehicles; the place looked like a warzone. In late November work started on replacing these with more aesthetic access controls. Wall and Broad streets, where the district's holiday tree is set up, already has some of the barriers removed. The tree, by the way, is the lineal descendent of the City's first, from the Dutch era. They put up a holiday tree at the head of the main canal of New Amsterdam, which decades later was filled in to make the present Broad Street. When the makeover is finished in spring 2004, Wall Street will have the full access control and security needed, but will be open and transparent to visitors and workers. Part of the plan gives certain streets to pedestrians during the work hours, like Nassau Street now. A more general boon for New York, this one enjoyed by the whole nation, is cell number portability, kicking in on November 24th. Now when you change cell phone service, you can keep your old number. The old and new services work out the transfer. The switch should take a couple hours by a visit to the new company's office. However, many complications can stretch this procedure out over a full day or two. Never the less, by Thanskgiving, about a full ONE MILLION cityfolk put in for the change of service!! Thanksgiving 2003 in the City was a sunny mild day, requiring only a light jacket to view the parade. 2-1/2 million people lined the parade route from the American Museum of Natural History to Herald Square, with a further 60 million watching it by television. It was a festive affair as always, with a mix of free-flying Continued in next message. --- þ RoseReader 2.52á P005004 |

balloons and moored ones attached to floats. Due to the bright daylight, the fabled moonlights along the route were not as prominent as on a cloudy day. Yet I'm sure darksky leaders taped the parade to show off the lamppoles at light pollution meetings. Astro Politics ------------ The utterly incomprehensible event was the massive larceny striking the office of Amateur Astronomers Association on November 8th. In the afternoon the Observing Group had its regular monthly meeting and many attendees brought equipment for the lunar eclipse on that evening. Six left their gear in the office, duly closed down and locked, while they went for supper. This was done to avoid dragging it all to the coffee shop and clogging its aisles and tables. When they returned to get their equipment and set off for the eclipse viewing in Central Park, everything was gone! Plain gone!! Included in the theft were several telescopes, large binoculars, tripods, accessories, cameras, books, luggage, extra clothing. Police from the 19th praecicnt arrived, studied the scene, and took a report. Probably due to the minor amount of loss -- it took place in the richest district in the country! -- and the pressing call from serious crimes, only a quick investigation could be done. AAA is discussing the matter with its building managers and insurance company. On top of this catastrophe, AAA continues to suffer decrepitude in its leadership. The Enjoy the Stars brochure, altho printed in October and handed out at some club meetings, is still not issued to the membership. It's part of the dues renewal mailing in early December. That's dilapidation of duty enough, but there's more. The edition now in hand is a second printing. The first was scrapped for having excessive mistakes. The club endured two instances of printing costs. The class which Rachel Connolly ran in October and November is a different paradigm of astronomy tuition from that implemented by Stew Rorer and John Pazmino. Yet, the writeup in Enjoy the Stars, in the second 'corrected' edition, for her class is the same as in previous editions for the Rorer & Pazmino class. Only the instructor is changed to Rachel Connolly. There were no minutes issued from the Board of Directors meeting of August 27th as at the November 19th meeting. After a couple seatholders agitated about the lack of minutes to read and approve, the minutes finally were issued on November 24th. The ByLaw reforms, to make the Board more open, answerable, and responsive to AAA members, are 'old business'. Only a few of them were even brought to the table, last done in January. Since then there was no further action. It seems that the reforms, sponsored by Steve Lieber and Bruce Kamiat, will be killed by simply not ever including them in Board agenda for the rest of the season. Eyepiece, the club's newsletter, had an ad in its November 2003 issue for club baseball caps. It suggested getting one to wear at the American Urban Star Fest. The Fest already took place in October. Eyepiece, November 2003, printed on its front page a major part of Steve Lieber's NYSkies article about light pollution, with no credit or reference to him. Steve issued in NYSkies a thank-you letter, noting that Eyepiece's pass-along of NYSkies material helps readers missing NYSkies or lacking Internet service. Eyepiece for December 2003 posted wrong dates for the Recent Astronomy Seminar: December 4th and 11th! The correct dates -- as noted in the events here -- are 4 and 18 December. NYSkies ----- Astronomers are exploiting NYSkies as a quick, handy, friendly, and potent source of astronomy news relating to the City. And there is LOTS of astronomy stuff going on around New York! Since it revived on 28 September 2001 (it was interrupted by World Trade Center) NYSkies became the definitive forum and public record for matters bearing on home astronomy in and around New York. Granted, some of the banter relates particularly to the Amateur Astronomers Association. It's the major astronomy union in town and every home astronomer around here eventually runs up against it. It pays to listen to those discussions (rants? blusters? tirades?), even if you opt out of playing in them. At the least, you take into account the words of the senior members before joining the Association. Or you can let NYSkies dialog modulate your choice to renew AAA membership. NYSkies is the soapbox the AAA Board and rank-&-file had to speak out on various Association problems. They turned to NYSkies simply because the AAA as yet does not have a good faith sincere forum for its own members within itself. Joining NYSkies is easy. Send an empty email to this Yahoo maillist at '. Its posts are sent to you in your email and you post to it by email. It's that simple! Or you may go to 'groups.yahoo.com/group/nysky'. If you are already signed up with Yahoo, you go and sign in and then 'join' NYSkies. If not, you have to go thru a silly 'registration' that's a oneshot chore, valid for all groups you may eventually join. The files and calendar area of NYSkies are accessible only thru the website. --- þ RoseReader 2.52á P005004 |
