Not really sure what you're referring to. There is no liquid fuel main stage on Ares I. If you're referring to the upper stage, this one was a mockup. So he's basically accurate here. -- Greg Moore Ask me about lily, an RPI based CMC. "Quadibloc" wrote in message ... NASA is making some rumblings that they're going to play this same trick again. The J-2X engine for the Ares I upper stage won't be ready for the spring 2014 Ares I-Y test flight, so there is a proposal to eliminate the upper stage from the next test (make it another dummy stage) and launch just the five segment SRB. Essentially they'd be repeating the Ares I-X test, only with a real Ares I five segment SRB first stage instead of a four segment shuttle SRB. That's some progress, since it would be a real first stage, but it still wouldn't be a full up test of Ares I. the Ares I second stage is an all new design with an a new engine (based on the J-2, but it's still a new engine). IMHO, until that second stage flies at least a couple of times, you're not really getting close to a vehicle you can confidently fly people on. From what I've read, the original plan was to use a dummy second stage on the second test also. The idea to put a live J-2X on it was a response to the waning interest in the Ares 1 that was evident after the Augustine Committee released their findings, but the funding isn't there to do it. Even in the Ares 1-Y test where the live second stage was to be used, the flight would have still have been suborbital, wasting yet more time before the booster is operational. Pat |
