A few thousand dollars spent on the right tools and a little effort will pay huge dividends.

A thousand litre liquid container obtained from a shipping company, modified to support talapia, combined with a compact agriculture planting, with total recycling of the water - produces protein and veggies. Adding a small chicken coop gives you eggs and meat. A small anaerobic digester makes gas for heating lighting, cooking and hot water. Being friendly with your neighbours and helping them out, means they can help you out too.

I have dairy and pig farms nearby, so I get milk and cheese along with steak fresh from the farm. Trading them for fish, chicken or eggs is a possibility, but usually I just give the excess away. I have some spare land on the West coast, so when the cows calf I pick up some bull calves cheaply and grow them in a field.
