Crew sizes on Shuttle to ISS
Does anyone know offhand the expected
crew sizes on future Shuttle flights to the ISS? Do the Russians have the capabilities required to offload enough stranded Shuttle astronauts at the ISS before supplies run out? My understanding is that they have but one Soyuz assembly line and they really have no practical means of increasing their production rate of Soyuz capsules and launchers. How would that impact the "safe haven" prospects for the ISS? If the remaining Shuttles were to be grounded for whatever reason - would the Russians be able to loft sufficient numbers of capsules in time to get everyone down? |

Crew sizes on Shuttle to ISS
Subject: Crew sizes on Shuttle to ISS
Does anyone know offhand the expected crew sizes on future Shuttle flights to the ISS? 5-7, as usual. Two ISS crewmembers will be offloaded from future crew rotation missions (and moved to Soyuz) to enable two additional EVA mission specialists to be assigned. DF |

No. ISS safe haven capability is around 90 days, assuming orbiter consumables are available. If the remaining Shuttles were to be grounded for whatever reason - would the Russians be able to loft sufficient numbers of capsules in time to get everyone down? Highly unlikely. -- JRF Reply-to address spam-proofed - to reply by E-mail, check "Organization" (I am not assimilated) and think one step ahead of IBM. |

It is possible that the ATV may be flying by the time the Orbiter is flying again. At least soon there after. |

The ATV will be flying in just a few months. The Shuttle won't be flying again before the end of the year at best. That isn't exactly true, ATV has been delayed into early 2005.
