The Spirit Panorama is made with 225 images (to get 3 color and 360 degrees). If all those images were 0.6 MB, that's 135 MB It would take 5 days to send that much data... Seems right, but they released a graph showing the daily data volume returned by Spirit. which has exceeded 200MB/day. It might have been more readable had they used PNG/GIF. |

See: http://tinyurl.com/338d9 That really shows how important Odyssey is in getting the data back to earth. It's so much nicer to build a rover to send data to an orbiting spacecraft rather than directly home. I know that NASA wants to send an orbiting communications satellite to facilitate future missions, but there have been critics. Perhaps the MER success will help bolster the idea. Why does Odyssey send more data some days than others? It has to do with the geometry of the passes. If the satellite passes directly overhead they get a longer window to send data and more can be sent. -- Greg Crinklaw Astronomical Software Developer Cloudcroft, New Mexico, USA (33N, 106W, 2700m) SkyTools Software for the Observer: http://www.skyhound.com/cs.html Skyhound Observing Pages: http://www.skyhound.com/sh/skyhound.html To reply remove spleen |

Yes, the culture is to report data in megabits rather than megabytes (a factor of eight). -- Greg Crinklaw Astronomical Software Developer Cloudcroft, New Mexico, USA (33N, 106W, 2700m) SkyTools Software for the Observer: http://www.skyhound.com/cs.html Skyhound Observing Pages: http://www.skyhound.com/sh/skyhound.html To reply remove spleen |

Answering by insulting and trying to make a fool of others you don't agree
with surely doesn't show any sign of superior intelligence to understand science... I didn't insult anyone but I get insulted by people like you, this just shows your childish and uneducated behaviour. I believe you are insulting the hundreds of scientists and engineers working on the MER project by questioning their integrity and dedication to science. You are basically saying some of them are liars with no proof at all. |

And as one of those engineers from JPL, I will say it again, knowing that
the conspiracy people will never listen, that there are about 5,000 people working at JPL alone, and may more working for NASA, the majority of who are blabbermouths who are definitely not being paid enough to keep quiet about anything, who will gladly call the local paper for free to spill the beans if anything really significant were found on any mission. What the conspiracy theorists don't seem to care to comment on is why JPL is having the biggest brain drain of highly qualified and experienced engineers and technicians in the past two years. Even a lot of the MER engineering team is out of work. Why ? But they're more concerned with imaginary people on Mars or aliens riding a comet than real, experienced, and talented people being laid off and the US possibly losing its expertise in interplanetary spacecraft building.
