Those are night vision binoculars. The caps have pin holes in them for
using the binoculars during the day. What's funnier the President knowing how to use night vision during the day or the uneducated massing making fun of him because they didn't know that? |

They must use ND filters and full aperture to be useful at all. Not much point in using binoculars to degrade human vision! They might be ND filters, but they certainly look like lens caps! Regards, Martin Brown |

Night vision don't have to work good during the day. I have some older
night vision monoculars and they have the same cap design. You can see through that small hole but just enough to make sure everything works. |

All the night vision binocs I've seen have pinhole caps for daytime use, not filters- and yes, the image is poor. But I don't think these are night vision binoculars. As amusing as the image is (and face it, the guy really opens himself up to humor like this), it is just one of a series taken during the same session, and I've seen another picture taken just a few seconds later with the caps off (see, for instance, http://www.snopes.com/photos/binoculars.asp). So in all likelihood he just put the binoculars to his eyes without noticing the caps (who hasn't?) and some photographer got that first shot. _________________________________________________ Chris L Peterson Cloudbait Observatory http://www.cloudbait.com |

So you`re saying the military uses IR binos in daylight by reducing the
aperture with pin holes in the lens caps? My suspicion is you`re makin` it up. Impact9 wrote in message oups.com... Those are night vision binoculars. Even the latest and greatest Gen4 night vision binoculars still look pretty horrible compared to the most modest ordinary binoculars. The military doesn't ordinarily use night vision binoculars during the day at all. But pinholes in the caps are a simple way to let them be used in bright light in a crunch- far easier than some ND filter scheme. I've used several different pairs of night vision binocs, and all have pinholes in their caps. (BTW, night vision and IR vision aren't the same thing, as I'm sure you know.) _________________________________________________ Chris L Peterson Cloudbait Observatory http://www.cloudbait.com |

Snopes has a page on this...
