They aren't going to get a human to Mars with a chemical rocket. Not
alive, anyway.

Actually, as been seen many times of late, humans need to sharpen up their
act on reliable hardware if anyone is going anywhere that is more than a day
or two away from the home planet. We need easy to fix systems, devices that
can be serviced using local fabrication techniques. Whey you depend on your
survival on a human created environment, you have to be sure it can be
fixed easily without fast support from home. I don't think we are anywhere
near that as yet.

Well a few month transit to mars wouldnt be too bad, with tons of
redundancy, including a redundant transit vehicle in loose formation
in case of troubles. A VERY FAST emergency supply vehicle, would be
doable

but a long transit time for a flags and footprints mission, where the
crew is barely able to walk upon arriving and having taken a possibly
large radiation dose, where they die young upon return is a bad
idea.........

NASA got what it deserved, they picked a pork payoff to existing
contractors and lost manned launchers

Plus, most people are skeptical about politicians keeping their own
promises. But a manned landing on Mars is a promise that has to
be kept by every administration between now and ..oh.. about 2040!

Four or five future administrations would have to keep President Obama's
policy promise. Since President Bush's /far less ambitious/ promise
for the Moon lasted barely the first year of his successor, what
do you think the odds are of a Mars landing being seen through
to completion?

Zilch! Such a long project is just not practical. NASA's goal needs
to be a crash program designed to solve an urgent need.
If for no other reason than to have enough support
to succeed. There are plenty of problems.

Bwahahahahahaha!!!

Meanwhile... The world's ONLY Space Ship gets mothballed while the
world's ONLY Space Station (built 95% by America and Americans) is
floating in space and WE CAN'T GET THERE...

We'll be PAYING THE RUSSIANS to take us to OUR Space Station.

Guess what the cost is per trip per astronaut?

$51,000,000.00 (each).

Well shuttler budget about 5 BILLION per year

so using russia still saves big bucks.

Face facts were a country in DECLINE

we can no longer afford the buck rogers when we cant afford to
maintain our infrastructure

Part of the problem is that NASA and NASA's contractors started to treat
the program as a cash cow to be milked for all it is worth.

Today's NASA can't do with supercomputers and CAD programs what our
grandfather's NASA did with slide rules, adding machines, and ink on
paper: go to the moon.

Since we did away with our source of NAZI scientist, there are no more
Von Braun's to be had. :-D And given the way we teach what we claim is
"science" in colleges today, it is little wonder we can't go to the moon.

You seem like a retard. Are you a retard or a Democrat-in-training?

There is no cost-per-year, retard. The cost isbased per shuttle mission,
retard.

The cost per mission is $450 million.

Do the math, you stupid ****.

so using russia still saves big bucks.

Hey buster!! the shuttle budget is about 5 BILLION per year! Divide 5
billion by 1 flight, ZERO FLIGHTS or 4.. the marginal costs over 4
per year are pretty low, fuel and overtime.

the killer cost for shuttle is the standing army of workers, who are
about to nearly all lose their job. I feel bad for them but its NASAs
fault having choosen a pork piggie payoff to existing shuttle
contractors, rather than pick a good system. That already existed.

ATLAS AND DELTA HEAVIES

either way cost is 5 billion per year.

Did you ever notice clueless people like buster resort to name calling
when they disagree with another poster rather than stick to the
subject..........
