AFAIK nobody has been in the Van Allen belts, let alone beyond them, since the return of the Apollo 17 mission in December, 1972. Even the HST, which is higher than most LEO spacecraft, stays well within the inner margin of the belts; the 1997 mission to service it probably represents the greatest altitude anyone has reached since the lunar landings. -- Odysseus |
