My point was to avoid buying Chineese-made products - that's why I asked
about Discovery. Even if I have to pay a small
premium, I prefer to see Americans working.

Some people distinguish between Taiwanese stuff and "Chinese" stuff. Discovery
makes decent scopes, I have an older Discovery and 2 Taiwanese scopes. Pretty
happy with them all.

You might check out Cloudy Nights for some reviews of the various DOBs.

As far as the finder, as someone else said, a Telrad and an 8x50 works the
best.

Very similar scopes to the classic Synta made Orion dobs are the Guan
Sheng made scopes from Taiwan marketed under the Celestron name.

Many would argue that Taiwan-made products and Chineese-made (sic) products
are not synonymous. Especially people who live in Taiwan.

I was pretty much set on getting Orion XT8, but, out of principle, I avoid
buying stuff made in China as much as I can,
so I searched for alternatives and came up with discovery-telescopes
company. One I'm interested in is 8" PDHQ:

Also, which viewfinder do you guys recommend - 8x50 or Telrad ?

TIA

Discovery has a pretty good reputation for quality compared to other mass-
produced dobs, but maybe not for meeting deadlines. I've never used one, so
I don't know.

As far as a finder - both.

I simply pointed out the Taiwan manufacturer in case our resident
Starlord has confused anyone with his politically biased telescope
FAQ.

FWIW, the Guan Sheng dobs are reported to be every bit as good as the
PDHQ's re optical quality and at a cheaper price.

I have a 10" GS Dob from OPT. Very fine optics and at a good price.

OTOH -- Discovery (also in Oceanside) make a variety of high quality scopes.

I've got a 6" f/8 mirror from them with enhanced "premium" coatings in
my Dob, and it peforms very well for it's size. I can't speak for the
mechanicals though.
