Default Strange shape seen in aurora photo

In case you haven't seen this:

In one of the photographs taken by Mikalsen was an "object" that
couldn't be identified. Although Mikalsen had taken several images at
the same location, just one photo showed a mysterious green parachute-
like object hanging with the main aurora.

The image shape is very easy to reproduce with any common magnifying
glass. I just did so using a low Sun and a 4" biconvex lens. The
question is whether it is possible to capture such an image off axis
in the camera used by Mikalsen. This should not be too difficult to
prove. Shame it looks so much like a UFO. It's bound to do the rounds
if the image escapes from these learned halls. :-)

I'm not sure how relevant it is, but if you follow the axis of the
'spike' downwards it points directly towards a bright porch light on one
of the houses.
