Default Astro: First piggybag images

First piggybag images with my Fujifilm S5500 camera. Don't know the names in
English of what I shot, but I'm sure one of you is going to tell me ;-) Very
simple photographs compared to what is posted here .. but hey, I'm a starter
;-)
The black and white image a bit overdone on purpose to pull the stars to the
front.

RAW, 5 sec exposure, 2.9 dia, ISO 200

That's a pretty narrow field of view. It shows part of Taurus the Bull
-- his face, the Hyades Cluster -- and on his shoulder the Pleiades or 7
sisters. The horns are out of frame. And I have no idea how to say
them in Dutch. Or anything else for that matter.

Often, defocusing slightly at the end of the exposure will help show
star colors which tend to wash out otherwise. A shorter focal length,
especially if that will make the lens faster also often helps show
color. Though that's with film. I've never tried it with a digital
camera. I don't have one good for exposures longer than about a second.
With film at ASA 200 I'd often use 10 minute or longer exposures even
at f/2. That would bring out far fainter stars but not really hurt the
bright ones. Again, I don't know if that translates to digital cameras
as film has reciprocity failure digital cameras don't have. A longer
exposure should pick up some of the nebulosity in the Pleiades as well.
I'd defocus the last minute of 10 just a tad to add color. I wish I
could show you the results but an ice storm a number of years ago cost
me my film collection when a tree crushed the part of the house they
were stored in. Few pictures survived.

Rick
