Default Why the Fuss

.... over the upcomming ( or any ) eclipse ?! Isn't it well possible to
achieve the same thing ( or better ), with suitable blanking of the
solar image using appropriate equipment ? OK, so you can't see stars
in the middle of the day, but still ...

I don't remember such a big fuss when we had a total eclipse back in the late 70s. Of course it was in February, and typically you can't even see the sun in February in Oregon because of all the cloud cover that time of year.. But I remember being impressed simply by the fact that after it had just gotten light in the morning, it suddenly got pitch dark again for a little while! The birds in the woods where squawking with bewilderment, not knowing whether to be singing their morning songs, or evening songs!
