"The Truth behind the Moon Landings"
Nick Mason writted:
: I was 11 years old and sat up watching it with my Dad, I still remember : what he said to me. He said it was too important an event in human : history to miss just because it happened after my bed time! I was : allowed to stay up all night and watch it all happen. That's the sort of dad I want to be... : I will never forget how exciting it was. Apollo 11 went off to the moon on my 4th Birthday, and I remember mum calling me in from seeing the butcher (who came round in a van and gave me bits of ham for free) with the words, 'Gavin, they're setting off for the moon, do you want to come and see?' It's great that I can get the kids to come out and watch the ISS going over, but I wish I could call my kids in with the same message as my mum did. ATB, Gavin |

Slightly OT - I was working in New England in Feb 1962 when I caught something called New England flu - sick as a parrot bedbound for a week, but what a week. Watched all the false starts and the eventual success of the first US orbital flight with John Glenn. Desperately exciting - took my mind right away from how ghastly I was feeling. I'm so tempted to give this one a miss - but it takes all sorts to make the world - so I'll force myself to watch and cringe. Incidentally - and a bit off-topic - what was everyone doing when the men were walking on the moon? It was my 21st Birthday. I had the party the day before so I could watch the first footsteps on TV. -- Mike Collins UK Replace the seed by the tree to reply |

Jonathan Silverlight wrote: Just thought I'd warn everyone - according to Radio Times, "a documentary on Five, The Truth behind the Moon Landings [their capitals] will look at how they could have been faked". I thought Five was supposed to be going up-market, but judging by their recently showing a film in the wrong aspect ratio, that was as true as this programme :-) Are there any names of people who are associated with this production? I mean the "researchers" involved. |

He said it was too important an event in human : history to miss just because it happened after my bed time! I was : allowed to stay up all night and watch it all happen. The story in our house is that I sat on my Dad’s knee during the landing, though at 11 months I don’t actually remember a lot (and was probably asleep anyway), but it does feel good to have been a part of it in a small way. Unlike my Dad who had a fairly big part (at least in the UK), his department were responsible for bringing the TV signals into the UK for transmission. That's the sort of dad I want to be... And the sort I’m trying to be. Their usual bedtime is around 7.30pm, during Mars Opposition we went to the SPA’s Jodrell Bank star party. It, for us, wasn’t the greatest of successes but at least they can say they were there, they also now recognise radio telescopes as telescopes. Also for me, their awe and wonder at the size of the dish was worth it. We got back to the hotel about 11.00 that night. : I will never forget how exciting it was. You make the excitement sound like it’s over, I still get excited about it now, although with a sense of sadness about the hesitancy since then to push on. Apollo 11 went off to the moon on my 4th Birthday, and I remember mum calling me in from seeing the butcher (who came round in a van and gave me bits of ham for free) with the words, 'Gavin, they're setting off for the moon, do you want to come and see?' Your Mum sounds great, the way you’ve written that I get the image of her saying it in exactly the same way she might say ‘Gavin, your Dad’s setting off for work, do want to come and see?' It's great that I can get the kids to come out and watch the ISS going over, but I wish I could call my kids in with the same message as my mum did. Yep, but different times give us different things – think of Christmas Day, I’m going to bore everyone senseless ;-) I think the key is capturing the childlike wonder (no matter how old the children :-) -- Simon 51:31N 0:38W http://www.cookie-pool.co.uk/Pool1.htm http://www.maidenhead.astronomical.s...care4free.net/ http://www.popastro.com/home.htm -- Posted via Mailgate.ORG Server - http://www.Mailgate.ORG |

She is, and she did! You know, until now, that hadn't even occurred to me! ROFL! IIRCC, Raymond Baxter related a story of how they'd had huge audiences for the broadcast he did to cover Apollo 11. When Apollo 12 set off, they interrupted the cricket to cover it. He later received a call from a member of the public to complain. Raymond Baxter retorted with 'but three men have just set off for the moon!'. The caller simply countered with 'Oh, they're *always* setting off for the Moon' ATB, Gavin |

I did watch it, but don't remember it. I do remember the tension during the Apollo 13 mission though. Dave |
