Fly by of 10 hard to reach asteroids
What would be the value of a fly by of an asteroid, apart from pretty
pictures ? Sometime ago I saw an idea on the Net, where a space probe would be inserted in an orbit, with same perihelion and aphelion as the asteroid, and same orientation *except* the inclination. The probe would pass the asteroid each time it crosses the ecliptic. With the DS-1 type ion motor, it must be possible to make a probe visit the points where difficult-to-reach asteroids cross the ecliptic at the time when they cross it. You won't get all the data, but a set of data, that can start being used in statistics. And the probe flies in the ecliptic level, which is easiest to reach. Regards Carsten Nielsen Denmark |
